MSC assessment of North Sea herring fishery

FCI / Nautilus has been contracted by Astrid Fiske, a largely family run fishing company in Rönnäng, southern Sweden, to undertake a full assessment of its operations exploiting the North Sea herring stock for the production of maatjes herring.

The company operates two modern pelagic vessels – Astrid and Astrid Marie – which, during the months of May, June and July, use purse seine gear to fish pre-spawning herring in the North Sea. Great care is taken not to damage this delicate and highly prized oil-rich fish – by using the purse seine fishing technique, catching relatively small quantities at a time, and avoiding fishing / transportation in poor sea conditions.

Whilst the vessels are based in Sweden, they land their North Sea maatjes herring catches directly to the processing plant of Werner Larsson Fish Export A/S in Skagen, Denmark, part of the Kennemervis Group that operates companies in Holland, Norway, Belgium and France, as well as Werner Larsson in Denmark.

The assessment process is expected to take about twelve months to complete. Further details are available on the MSC website under “fisheries – fisheries undergoing assessment”.
